Senior Community Service Employment Program

For Unemployed Low-Income Persons Age 55 and Over

The Senior Community Service Employment Program provides part-time community service work an training for Georgia’s unemployed low-income seniors age 55 and older and helps them obtain paid employment.  Job counseling, career development assistance, and referral to needed community resources are among the services available to older persons who enroll in the Program.

Paid Training

While participating in Community Service or attending Local Technical Schools or working with Private Sector Employers

Participants in the SCSEP earn minimum wage and develop marketable job skills while working in 20-hour per week assignments in non-profit organizations and government agencies in their communities.  They also receive training in resume development, interviewing, and other job-seeking skills and area given current consumer information on topics of interest to older persons.

Some participants in the SCSEP enroll in a special employment project with private sector employers which offers short-term training and job placement.

Others may participate in classroom training at local technical schools with training organizations in their communities.

Older persons are trained in occupations that are in demand such as teachers’ assistants, child care, food preparation and service, care of the frail and ill elderly, horticulture and outdoor landscape work, indoor and outdoor maintenance, driving and delivery, retail sales, receptionist roles and clerical work, computer operations (including word processing, database and spreadsheet), administration, general office work, and customer service.

Assistance in Obtaining Regular, Paid Employment

After completing their training, seniors may be hired by the community agency or company that provided their training or by another local employer.  Older workers consistently demonstrate their skills, dependability, and positive work ethic that indeed, Ability is Ageless!

Serving Every Region of the State

The Georgia Department of Human Resources Division of Aging Services administers the SCSEP through contracts with select participating Area Agencies on Aging which, in turn, contract with local service providers.  Three national SCSEP contractors also provide SCSEP services in the state:  the AARP Foundation, Experience Works, and the National Council on Aging.
